FAQ-BECKER incendur®

1. Questions and answers regarding process technology

1.1. How do you manage to render the shaped part flame-resistant?
The veneer cell walls are impregnated with Incendur® solution which gives the wood flame resistant properties during the pressing process.

1.2. Is this chemical absolutely harmless for humans?
The used salts are absolutely harmless for humans.

1.3. Is the entire shaped part impregnated with the chemical?
The entire shaped part consists of incendur® veneers. Therefore, the part is absolutely flame-resistant.

1.4. Is the adhesive flame-resistant as well?
A specific flame-resistant 2-component adhesive system is used for pressing the shaped parts.

1.5. Can existing pressing tools be used?
The pressing of the blanks does not differ from standard shaped parts, only the pressing time is somewhat prolonged.

2. Questions and answers regarding the parts’ properties

2.1.Why are incendur® shaped parts flame-resistant?
The beech wood veneers are entirely impregnated with salts that were first dissolved in water. This prevents outgassing from the wood in case of fire as these gases would feed the flames.

2.2. Does it feel different to touch than normal wood and is there a perceivable difference in the way the product looks?
The warm colour of the beech remains the same. It only gets a little darker.

2.3. Are there limits to its deformability?
Linked veneers only swell very little which makes them somewhat brittle.
Therefore, the three-dimensional forming cannot go as far as is the case with conventional forming. The forming capability of thin precious wood veneer is used as point of reference.

2.4. What is the smallest radius possible?
With veneers as thin as 1.1 mm even radiuses of R 25 can be pressed.

2.5. Does the process render the shaped part more stable as well?
The stability of the shaped part slightly decreases due to the process. For example, the width of the waist of a 9.5 mm thick chair shell should not be less than 240 mm.

2.6. How are the tolerances for the shaped part?
They are similar to the known tolerances.

2.7. Can I process Becker incendur® shaped wood without restrictions?
Generally the processing does not differ from conventional processing.

2.8. Can I glue BECKER incendur® shaped wood components together?
Yes, this can be done without any difficulty by using a PVAC adhesive.

2.9. Is the weight of the shaped parts increased?
The weight of the shaped wood is increased by appr. 20 %.

2.10. How did you test the material?
Becker incendur® was tested by an independent testing institute according to the requirements of DIN 4102, part 1 and its rating as building material class B1 “flame-resistant” was confirmed.

The material fulfils the requirements for flammability class S-4, smoke emission class SR-2 and drop forming class ST-2 according to E DIN 54837:2003 for railway vehicles in the German-speaking area.

The product passed the fire behaviour test according to NF F 16-101: 1988 and NF P 92-501: 1990 for the French railway market. The corresponding certificates are available.

2.11. Can the material be easily disposed of?
The material can be disposed of via the usual channels of the waste disposal industry.

3. Questions and answers regarding the surface

3.1. Can I colour the surface by staining it?
The shaped parts remain natural wood and can therefore be finished by staining in the usual way. The final coating is a fire-resistant paint.

3.2. What kind of coating is required?
We guarantee a surface coating meeting the requirements according to DIN 4102 B1 “flame resistant” and EN 5510-2 for railway vehicles.

3.3. Can I get a face veneer (sliced veneer) as cover layer?
Yes, all hardwood veneers can be used.

4. Questions and answers regarding distribution

4.1. What does incendur® mean?
incendur® is a pleasant sounding coinage. It combines the latin word incendium for fire (incen) and durability (dur).

4.2. Is incendur® shaped wood exclusively available from Becker?
incendur® shaped parts made from wood certified according to DIN 4102 B1 are only available from Becker KG.

4.3. What are the minimum order quantities?
The minimum order quantity is 250 shaped parts per order. However, in individual cases other batch sizes can be agreed.

4.4. Can you prove that the wood really comes from sustainable German forestry?
Becker KG is PEFC-certified. (PEFC/04-31-03-41)

4.5. What guarantee do you offer?
If the shaped wood is used for its intended purpose only, we provide a five-year guarantee on the durability (bonding). The surface coating is excluded from this guarantee.
